Wireless headphones have become an everyday essential, but choosing between Sony, Bose, and Apple can feel impossible. All three brands make excellent products. All three have loyal fans. All three cost over 300 dollars. So which one should you actually buy?
I spent six weeks testing the Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra, and AirPods Max 2. I wore them on flights, in coffee shops, during workouts, and through eight-hour workdays. This comparison covers sound quality, noise cancellation, comfort, battery life, and special features. By the end, you will know exactly which pair matches your life.
Sound Quality: Three Different Approaches
Sony focuses on fun, bass-forward sound. The WH-1000XM6 has a warm profile that makes pop, hip-hop, and electronic music sound exciting. You can adjust the EQ in the app if you want more treble or less bass. The 360 Reality Audio feature creates a spacious soundstage for supported tracks. For most listeners, Sony sounds the most immediately pleasing.
Bose takes a more neutral approach. The QuietComfort Ultra delivers clear, balanced sound without hyping any frequency range. Vocals sound natural. Acoustic instruments have accurate timbre. The open soundstage makes you forget you are wearing headphones. If you listen to classical, jazz, or audiobooks, Bose is the better choice.
Apple’s AirPods Max 2 sound clean and precise but slightly sterile. The bass is tight but not punchy. The mids and highs are extremely detailed. You will hear nuances in recordings that other headphones gloss over. That is great for critical listening but less enjoyable for casual background music. Apple also locks lossless audio to the USB-C connection, not Bluetooth, which limits convenience.
Winner for sound: Tie between Sony and Bose depending on your taste. Apple comes third unless you prioritize analytical listening.
Noise Cancellation: Close but Not Equal
Bose invented consumer noise cancellation, and the QuietComfort Ultra shows why. The system adapts to your environment in real time. On an airplane, it removes engine drone better than anything else. In a coffee shop, it lets through just enough ambient sound so you do not feel isolated. The ear cups seal perfectly for most head shapes.
Sony is a very close second. The WH-1000XM6 blocks slightly less high-frequency noise like keyboard clicks and crying babies. However, Sony offers a barometric pressure optimization feature that helps during takeoff and landing. For most users, the difference is negligible.
Apple’s AirPods Max 2 have good noise cancellation but not great. The ear cups feel heavier and do not seal as consistently. Apple’s adaptive transparency mode is excellent, but that is not noise cancellation. For blocking sound, Sony and Bose are clearly ahead.
Winner for noise cancellation: Bose by a small margin.
Comfort and Build Quality
Comfort is personal, but some patterns emerged during testing. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra weighs only 250 grams. The headband uses soft padding that never creates a hot spot. The ear cups have deep, plush cushions. I wore these for six hours straight without any discomfort. They are the clear winner for all-day wear.
Sony’s WH-1000XM6 weighs 260 grams, almost identical to Bose. The ear cups are slightly shallower. If you have larger ears, your earlobes may touch the inside mesh. The headband clamp force is moderate. Most people will find these comfortable for three to four hours, but Bose lasts longer.
Apple’s AirPods Max 2 weigh 385 grams. That is noticeably heavier. The metal construction looks premium but digs into your head after an hour. The mesh headband distributes weight well, but gravity eventually wins. I could not wear these for more than two hours without wanting a break.
Winner for comfort: Bose. Runner-up: Sony. Distant third: Apple.
Battery Life and Charging
Sony leads here by a wide margin. The WH-1000XM6 lasts 40 hours with noise cancellation on. A three-minute charge gives one hour of playback. The battery drains slowly over months of use.
Bose offers 32 hours with noise cancellation. That is still excellent and enough for a transatlantic flight plus several days of commuting. Charging is via USB-C, and a 15-minute charge gives three hours.
Apple claims 24 hours on the AirPods Max 2. In our test, we got 22 hours. That is fine but unremarkable. The bigger issue is the proprietary charging method. The AirPods Max 2 uses a magnetic connector that only works with Apple cables. You cannot use your phone charger in a pinch. This alone is a dealbreaker for many travelers.
Winner for battery: Sony.
Special Features and Ecosystem
Apple’s main advantage is the ecosystem. The AirPods Max 2 switch instantly between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Spatial audio with head tracking works seamlessly across Apple TV and Apple Music. If you own multiple Apple devices and care about effortless switching, nothing else comes close.
Sony offers multipoint pairing for two devices, but switching is slower and less reliable. The Sony app has extensive customization including EQ, adaptive sound control, and speak-to-chat. Android users get LDAC support for near-lossless Bluetooth audio.
Bose has the simplest feature set. Multipoint pairing works well. The app is basic but functional. No fuss, no gimmicks. For people who just want headphones that work without constant tweaking, Bose is refreshingly straightforward.
Winner for ecosystem: Apple for iOS users. Winner for Android: Sony.
Price and Value
At full retail, all three cost around 400 to 550 dollars. However, Sony and Bose go on sale frequently. The WH-1000XM6 often drops to 350 dollars. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra can be found for 380 dollars. Apple rarely discounts the AirPods Max 2, and when they do, it is usually only 50 dollars off.
Value ranking: Sony offers the most features for the lowest typical price. Bose offers the best comfort and noise cancellation for a moderate premium. Apple offers the best ecosystem integration but charges more for less battery life and heavier build.
Final Verdict: Which Should You Buy?
Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want the best battery life, fun sound, and frequent sales. This is the best all-around choice for most people. Buy the Bose QuietComfort Ultra if comfort is your top priority or you spend hours on airplanes. Buy the AirPods Max 2 only if you are deeply invested in the Apple ecosystem and do not mind charging every day with a proprietary cable.
For me, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the winner. It does everything well. It costs less. It lasts longer. The Bose is a close second, and the AirPods Max 2 only makes sense for Apple loyalists. Choose based on what matters most to you.
Brand Rated tested all three headphones with firmware updated to June 2026. Test conditions included daily commuting, office work, and two cross-country flights.
